Pressure wave induced sound measurement for diagnosing the operation status of the J-PARC pulsed spallation neutron source

A liquid mercury target for the spallation neutron source is installed in the J-PARC. The liquid mercury is enclosed with the multi-walled stainless steel vessel. At the time of highly intense proton beams hits the target at a repetition rate of 25 Hz, pressure waves, that causes cavitation erosion, are generated owing the rapidly thermal expansion of mercury. We have installed the target diagnostic system consisting of a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) and a dynamic microphone to remotely investigate the structural integrity of the target under high-radiation environment. In this study, aiming to understand correlation between the acoustic vibration and the operation conditions such as the proton beam power and beam profile, proton beam induced acoustic vibration was measured by parametrically changing the target operation conditions. The result showed that the sound is well correlated with the operation conditions.

Effects of temperature fluctuation on PIV measurement of natural circulation flow field

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) was measured in scaled-model water experiments simulating a natural circulation flow field in a sodium-cooled fast reactor vessel. The temperature fluctuation in the natural circulation flow field causes the distribution of the refractive index. Thus, the temperature fluctuation affects the uncertainty of the velocity in the PIV measurement. In this study, the authors evaluated the effects of the temperature fluctuation on the PIV measurement in the natural circulation flow field.

Effect of wall boundary on growing and collapsing behaviors of cavitation bubble

A mercury target for spallation neutron source has been in operation at the J-PARC. When the high-intense proton beams hits the mercury to produce spallation neutrons, pressure waves are generated due to the abrupt heat deposition of mercury. Mercury enclosure vessel made of stainless steel with a thin wall thickness of 3 mm is severely damaged by pressure wave-induced cavitation erosion. Recently a double-walled structure with narrow gap channel at the front part of the vessel has been developed to mitigate the cavitation damage. In this study, we observed experimentally the growth and collapse behavior of cavitation bubbles in the narrow channel by using a technique of spark discharge in water and a high-speed video camera. Furthermore, the effects of flow velocity and gap width on collapsing pressure were investigated with focusing on the ratio of the projection radius to the gap width. The relationship between the narrow gap and the collapsing pressure will be discussed.

Planar triple parallel jet sodium test for thermal striping analysis code validation in sodium-cooled fast reactor

A numerical simulation code named MUGTHES has been developed for estimation of the thermal striping issue. In fundamental validation, the benchmark analysis was considered using the experimental data of planar triple parallel jet sodium test (PLAJEST). Three specific experimental conditions of PLAJEST at Vr=1, 1.56, and 5.56 in ration of discharged velocities of the side jet to the center jet were employed for the benchmark analyses. Through the benchmarks, applicability of the large eddy simulation (LES) approach in MUGTHES to simulate thermal striping phenomena was potentially confirmed and issues to be modified in the future works were indicated.
